Revgear Europe’s Mike Wilkinson had his next UFC outing confirmed by the promotion earlier today, and it’s a grudge match that will see him square off against “Mr Finland”, Makwan Amirkhani.
The featherweight encounter will take place at UFC London, which is held at the O2 Arena on February 27th. The event will be headlined by Michael Bisping vs. Gegard Mousasi.
Wilkinson (9-1) has been out of action since October of last year with injuries keeping him from gracing the Octagon. However, his last victory was a pertinent one as he knocked out Nicklas Backstrom to take the KO of the Night honours in his opponent’s native land. Backstrom is a training partner of Amirkhani (12-2), and therefore there’s team pride on the line as they look to even up the scores. Amirkhani antagonised Wilkinson, calling him out and stating that he’d “put him to sleep” should they meet in the cage.
The Wigan man responded in kind, saying Amirkhani was ‘not on his level’, and now the stage is set for them to do battle to prove it once and for all.
Mike rarely gets brought into the kind of online disputes we see many other fighters engage in, but Amirkhani has rubbed him up the wrong way, just like his teammate previously, and he’ll be looking to end his night in a similar fashion. Most of all, he’ll be keen to get back to competition in full health, and we’re excited to see him perform on the world’s biggest stage where he belongs.
