Mayweather vs McGregor is the Hottest Ticket in Town
We’re less than a month away from the big date, and anticipation for the upcoming fight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor is reaching fever pitch. When you think about it, the timing for this fight is perfect. It can absolutely dominate the sports news cycle during the lull in the dog days of summer. Everyone and their cousin has a take on the upcoming fight, and the hype is absolutely through the roof. Despite no one really knowing what to expect, it’s still the biggest ticket around, and this unpredictability might actually be fueling the fire.
Tickets for the fight recently went on sale and despite prices reaching into five figures, the event sold out in a matter of minutes. Just the codes for the opportunity to purchase a seat at all were initially going for hundreds of dollars. Now that tickets are gone, second-hand sales of seats are reportedly going for nearly $20,000 at sites like StubHub. These numbers are astounding for a fight that’s more spectacle than sport, and there’s no telling whether the end product will justify that kind of cost.
The outcome is definitely up in the air, but experts are leaning toward Mayweather when it comes to picking a favourite. Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson went on record saying McGregor will get killed against Mayweather, and it’s hard to argue against his reasoning. Say what you will about Mayweather personally, but there’s no denying that he’s one of the greatest boxers in the history of the sport. He’s 49-0 in professional competition and is one of the best defensive boxers in history, not to mention the most accurate striker. With McGregor forced to focus on his striking, a good question is whether or not he’ll even be able to land a punch, much less knock Mayweather out.
For his part, McGregor is one of the most electric fighters the UFC has ever seen and his greatest strength is his striking. The current Lightweight Champion has won 18 of his 21 matches by knockout, so he makes much more sense than a fighter whose skill set leans more toward grappling and submissions. While McGregor translating to boxing isn’t necessarily apples and oranges, it’s still won’t be easy. Conor is a highly regarded for his lethal left-hand, but Manny Pacquiao was one of the most legendary Southpaws in the sport and it didn’t do much to help him. McGregor talks a big game, but he has the skills to be able to back it up. While the experts generally agree that Mayweather has the edge here, fans are putting their money on McGregor, with the underdog being the overwhelming choice at sports books.
Both of them are terrific competitors in their own right, but each skill set is so radically different it’s tough to make predictions on what’s really going to happen. Because the fight is being held as a boxing match with the associated rules, most experts believe McGregor will be at a disadvantage without his devastating kicks or the ability to take the fight to the floor. For an educated analysis of the match, fans might do well to find a platform featuring strategies on what to expect from major sports events. These articles often include everything from basic odds breakdowns to deeper analysis of the fighters’ histories and other statistics. Even with that information, this fight is still largely a toss-up, though we’ll admit we also have to side with Mayweather given that he’s most at home in the boxing ring.
The fight is set to go down August 26, 2017 at the T-Mobile Arena outside of Las Vegas. Expectations for the superfight are impossibly high, and we’d be lying if we didn’t admit we’re curious as to what this could mean for more MMA athletes to make the transition to boxing, and vice versa. Given the circus it’s become, we only hope the contest lives up to the hype.
