Karlos Vermola vs. Chris Leben December 29, 2012 at UFC 155

The UFC always delivers a big New Year card, and this year is no exception, with the main event a Heavyweight Championship rematch between Junior Dos Santos and Cain Velásquez.

Headlining the preliminary card will be iron jawed slugger, Chris “The Crippler” Leben taking on the Czech powerhouse Karlos “The Terminator” Vemola. In what is looking to be an action packed bout.

Vemola trains out of London Shootfighters, which is also home to John Hathaway and the former training ground for the infamous Lee Murray.

After fighting most of his career at heavyweight, Vemola has found his home at middleweight via a brief stint at light heavyweight.

Vemola blasted through his first 7 fights in a total of 7 minutes and 40 seconds, all first round stoppages, his win streak came to a grinding halt in his UFC début against relentless wrestler John Madsen who handed him a decision loss

For his next fight Vemola decided to drop to LHW and take on Seth Petruzelli at UFC 122, getting back to what he does best and destroying Petruzelli in 3 minutes and 46 seconds earning him KO of the night. This was followed by a grappling heavy decision loss to Ronny Markes, Vemola would then move to middleweight where again he bounced back from a loss with a stoppage win. Tapping Mike Massenzio with a rear naked choke in the second round. Two months later Vemola was on the receiving end of a second round rear naked choke from undefeated in the UFC Francis Carmont.

Vemola will not be dropping to welterweight after this loss however, and will be looking to add to his 9 wins, which have all come by stoppage.

Leben is known as one of the most consistently exciting fighters in the UFC, his impressive UFC career has spanned over 7 years and has totalled 19 fights, 4 KO of the night, and 2 fight of the night bonuses.

Unfortunately Leben has also failed drug tests twice whilst in the UFC, in his last fight he tested positive for Oxymorphone and Oxycodone, the UFC gave him a years suspension and sent him to rehab, Leben returns hoping to leave the troubled side of his life behind and return to his fan friendly fight style.

The fights in which Vemola has lost he has been out wrestled, and Leben will not be someone who is going to do that, Vemola should look to take Leben down and win the fight with his thunderous ground and pound, only the UFC’s middleweight elite have been able to stand with Leben and retain consciousness, superior grapplers have been able to hold Leben down, or find submissions, but as Leben showed when he triangled Yoshihiro Akiyama he has an ever developing submission game, highlighted by him gaining his BJJ blue belt earlier this year.

Vemola can win the fight by taking Leben down and controlling him with his wrestling whilst delivering ground and pound, due to his granite chin and unbending will, Leben will never be out of the fight, he is dangerous off his back, and standing Leben is always in with a chance, best seen in one of my personal favourite KO’s. Terry Martin cracked Leben with shots that could have knocked out a horse, Leben rocked, fired back catching Martin with huge left hooks sending him crashing to the canvas, and winning him the fight.

Vemola’s fights have been extremely exciting when he hasn’t been out grappled, and Leben will not be looking to stall, expect fireworks in this fight!
